Abstract

Children are the wealth of our society and special gift to the world. According to American Heart Association, Congenital heart disease occurs in approximately 1% of live birth per year. Nurse researcher felt the necessity to identify the heath measures to improve the quality of life of children with heart diseases and their loved ones. The awareness about the possible pediatric cardiac rehabilitation measures is important for the mothers, to help their children suffering of congenital heart disease, for successful adaptation to a new way of life. In addition, health professionals should take measures to improve the skills of caregivers thereby to promote the health and rehabilitation of children. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: A Study to assess the impact of nurse driven Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation Program among mothers of children undergoing cardiac surgery at Pediatric Tertiary Care Hospital, Chennai. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: 1. To assess the pre-test level of knowledge and practice of the mothers regarding pediatric cardiac rehabilitation. 2. To assess the effectiveness of pediatric cardiac rehabilitation program among the mothers of children undergoing cardiac surgery. 3. To compare the pre -test and post-test level of knowledge and practice of the mothers regarding pediatric cardiac rehabilitation. 4. To associate the post-test level of knowledge and practice of mothers regarding pediatric cardiac rehabilitation with their selected demographic variables. METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted with 60 mothers in quantitative approach and the study design is pre experimental - one group pre-test and post-test. Non- probability-purposive sampling technique was applied. The study was conducted in Cardiology wards at ICH &HC, Egmore, Chennai. On the first day, pre-test was conducted to the mothers of children suffering of congenital heart disease, using semi structured questionnaire and checklist, and then the data were collected. After pre-test, the mothers were gathered in the Cardiology ward for 30-45 minutes and a Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation Program regarding post operative care was conducted using booklet. The booklet was issued to all participants after conducting the program. On the 7thday, the post-test was conducted from the same subjects using the same semi structured knowledge questionnaire & checklist on Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation. RESULTS: The finding of the study revealed that, out of 60 samples, in pre-test 85% of mothers are having inadequate level of knowledge, 15% of mothers having moderately adequate knowledge, 80% of mothers are having poor level of practice score and 20% are having moderate level of practice score. In the post-test 73.33% of mothers are having adequate level of knowledge, 26.76% of mothers are having moderate level of knowledge, 78.33% of mothers are having good practice score and 21.67% mothers are having moderate practice score. The ‘t’ value of pre-test and post-test is 16.25 at p=0.001, and it is very highly significant. After intervention, mothers gained 37.56% of knowledge and 34.60% of practice than the pre-test. CONCLUSION: The study was inferred that Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was the best teaching strategy to impart knowledge on post cardiac surgery care, commonly encountered in developing and developed countries. This can be continued through on-going Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs by Nurses. The findings of the present study are alarming and emphasize the needs and prompt attention of health care providers especially the Nurses play cardinal role to motivate the parents to improve their knowledge regarding Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
