Abstract

Breakfast consumption habit is associated with adequate macro and micronutrient intake So it is considered to be the most important meal of the day. Even though there is a common impression, that regular breakfast consumption is a healthy habit; frequency of breakfast consumption habit has declined in children, adolescents, and adults in the past several decades. Breakfast omission is defined as skipping breakfast at least three days a week. Our study has been designed to study the relationship between breakfast omission and parameters like cognition, quality of sleep and glucose homeostasis in young adult Indian population. It was an observational study. Physiological parameters and anthropometric parameters were measured. Quality and pattern of sleep was assessed by The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale and cognitive abilities were measured by using Woodcock Johnson battery of cognitive abilities. Plasma glucose estimation was done in fasting state and 2hour after 75gm glucose load. On analysis, we have found that breakfast eaters had significantly higher BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist hip ratio when compared to breakfast skippers. Breakfast eaters had significant better sleep quality when compared to the breakfast skippers. Breakfast eaters performed significantly well in digit span task when compared to the breakfast skippers and poor performance of breakfast skippers in digit span task was positively associated with sleep disturbance and negatively associated with blood glucose level. Breakfast eaters had higher blood glucose level (especially OGTT) when compared to the breakfast skippers.
