Abstract

BACK GROUND: Placental cord blood drainage after vaginal delivery involves unclamaping the previously clamped and divided umbilical cord and allowing the blood from the placenta to drain freely in to an appropriate receptacle. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of placental cord blood drainage after vaginal delivery in reducing the duration and blood loss during third stage of labour. DATA SOURCE: 1. Systematic review by cochrane collaboration – 2009, 2011. 2. Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of India volume 57, No: 3: May/June 2007. 3. Searching bibliographies and abstracts from Journal of Medical Association of Thailand 2009/BJOG 2005. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Primi/Multigravida (up to G3) between the age group of 18-35 yrs, with term, singleton alive pregnancy with vertex presentation, adequate liqour, with average size (E.F.Wt 2-4Kg) fetus, with out any complications, expected to have spontaneous vaginal delivery. PARTICIPANTS: 400 women. 200 Control, 200 study. INTERVENTIONS: In the study group placental end of the previously clamped and cut umbilical cord was unclamped immediately after vaginal delivery, while remaining clamped in the control group. CONCLUSION: Placental Cord blood drainage is simple, safe, non invasive method which reduces the duration and blood loss of third stage of Labour thereby prevents postpartum haemorrhage.
