Abstract
A study to evaluate the effectiveness of aromatherapy on depression among senior citizens residing in selected old age home, Coimbatore. The present study was conducted in Vadavelli at Coimbatore District. Pre experimental one group pretest and posttest design was used for this study. Permission was obtained from the chairman of the oldage home and oral consent was obtained from subjects. Data collection was done over the period of 4 weeks. The investigator selected 40 senior citizens through convenience sampling technique. In pre test, Geriatric depression scale was used for assessing the level of depression among senior citizens. Investigator applied 5 drops of Neroli oil with 10ml of coconut oil at the forehead of the subjects once in a day for 15 days. After completion of the intervention post test was done. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the findings of the study. There was highly significant difference (P<0.01) in the mean score of level of depression among Senior Citizens. The mean score were pretest 19.7 [± 4.22] and post test15.95 [± 4.74]. There was a significant association (P<0.05) was found between the depression score and selected demographic variables like gender, education, previous occupation, chronic health problems, marital status, support system. It is concluded that aromatherapy helps to reduce the level of depression among the senior citizens.
