Abstract

This study was done to know the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in adult HIV patients on HAART irrespective of staging and correlation between the TSH and CD-4 count. METHODOLOGY: Patient attending ART centre in madras medical college in RGGGH are included in the study. Questionnaire and clinical examination was done and free T3, T4, TSH and CD-4 count was done. Sample size is 100. Study period is 6 months APRIL – 2014 to SEPTEMBER – 2014. RESULTS: The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in our study is 11% (11 out of 100 patients). Overt hypothyroidism – 2%, subclinical hypothyroidism – 9%. 8 patients are male sex and CD-4 count less than 200. There is significant negative correlation between CD-4 count and TSH (Pearson Chi-Square p value .000). CONCLUSION: There is increased prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in HIV patients on HAART especially male sex, low CD-4 count and longer duration of disease.
