Abstract

Nephrotic syndrome is a chronic disease that not only influence the child’s health status but also claims the peace of the whole family. Nephrotic syndrome is a symptom complex manifested by massive edema, hypoalbuminemia, marked albuminuria and hyperlipidemia .It can be classified as congenital, idiopathic or primary and secondary types. Congenital nephrotic syndrome is rare but a serious and fatal problem usually associated with other congenital anomalies of kidney. It is an inherited autosomal recessive disease. Primary or Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome is the most common type about 90% and regarded as autoimmune phenomenon, as it in children about 10% of all cases. This condition may occur due to some form of chronic glomerulonephritis. TITLE: “A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge regarding Home Care Management of Children with Nephrotic Syndrome among Mothers of affected under five children in selected medical wards at Institute of Child Health and hospital for children, Egmore, Chennai-08”. OBJECTIVES: 1)To assess the pretest knowledge of mothers regarding home care management of children with nephrotic syndrome 2)To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on home care management of children with nephrotic syndrome among mothers of affected under five children. 3)To compare the pre-test and post test level of knowledge regarding home care management of children with nephrotic syndrome among mothers of affected under five children. 4)To find the association between the post-test knowledge scores of mothers with selected demographic variables. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was conducted with 60 samples of mothers in quantitative approach, using pre experimental one group pre-test post-test design, and the sampling selection was done by convenient sampling technique.Pre existing knowledge was assessed by using semi structured questionnaires. After the pre test, structured teaching programme was conducted to the mothers regarding home care management of children with nephrotic syndrome .After 7 days post test was conducted by using the same tool. RESULTS: The results shows that mothers were gained 38.06% after structured teaching programmeand the mean difference were 3.81 by using McNamara’s chi-square test which is statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Hence the structured teaching program was instructionally effective, appropriateand feasible. Ithelped the mothers to provide home care to the children with nephrotic syndrome.
