Abstract

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a primary acquired disorder characterized by the presence of well circumscribed, milky white or chalk-white macules on the skin and mucous membranes due to the result of loss of functioning melanocytes from the involved areas. Vitiligo can have serious implications on mental health and can cause significant social stigma. In this study, topical recombinant human epidermal growth factor is evaluated for its use as a topical alternative in treatment of vitiligo. AIM: The aim of this study is to determine an effective alternative topical treatment to topical placental extract in focal stable vitiligo. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to compare the efficacy and safety of topical application of recombinant human epidermal growth factor versus topical placental extract in the treatment of focal stable vitiligo. METHODS: A study of 60 eligible patients both old and new cases clinically diagnosed as focal stable vitiligo were assigned to one of the two groups randomly. Group A received topical placental extract and Group B received topical recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) for daily application for 6 months. Patients were further followed for 6 months to see any relapse. Side-effects were also noted. RESULTS: Though not statistically significant, almost equal treatment response and DLQI improvements are seen with topical placental extract compared to topical recombinant human Epidermal Growth Factor. CONCLUSION: Hence, although not very effective, topical placental extract and topical recombinant Human Epidermal Growth Factor are equally efficacious in treating focal stable vitiligo without any significant side effects with good compliance.
