Abstract

The clinical study on “Sala thamba vatham” on the basis of Ennvagai thervu was carried out in the Out patient department (OPD) of Department of Noi naadal (Post Graduate) in Government Siddha Medical college, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli. 40 male patients were selected under inclusion criteria from the Out-patient department. The diagnosis of the disease was made through Ennvagai thervu. The results obtained from the study are summarized as follows, • All the cases were suffering from frequent micturition and weak stream of urine. • Majority of the cases were having the symptoms of painful micturition (52.5%), incontinence of urine (42.5%) and dribbling of urine (42.5%). • All the patients reported decreased output of urine. • On observing the neikuri patterns, Aravil mothiram was most observed (45%). • On observing the naadi nadai, Vatha pitha naadi nadai was mostly observed (67.5%) followed by Pitha vatham (25%). • In kanmenthiriyangal, Eruvai was affected in all the cases. • In aasayam, salavaasayam was affected in all the cases as the disease itself emphasizes Sala- thamba- vatham. • Alterations in equilibrium of the three humors were elicited. The disease is mainly due to the derangement of vatham. In vaatha, abaanan was affected mainly in all the cases. • Samanan and devathathan were also affected. • In pitham, Sadhaga pitham was affected mainly. • Manikkadai nool was measured and majority of the cases were measured 9¼ viratkadai alavu, which in turn correlates with the symptoms of Sala thamba vatham in literature evidence. CONCLUSION: Sala thamba vatham is primarily due to the derangement of Vatham. Due to the variation in the intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the mukkutram get deranged. The results show that, Out of the three Uyir thathu, Vatha is most affected and the neikuri pattern observed and the naadi pattern observed also shows the same derangement of Vatham. The clinical symptoms of Salathamba vatham may be correlated with Benign prostatic hyperplasia and the author have selected the cases on the basis of the symptoms of Salathamba vatham as quoted by Yugimuni in Yugi vaithiya chinthamani. The results of the study are also found to be positive regarding the correlation. The study has been conducted as an observational study only. However, more experimental studies and observational studies with larger samples should be carried out in validating the research in more efficient way in future.
