Abstract

The present study “Role of Jathikaai Mathirai in (Juvenile seizure disorder)” was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of siddha formulation “Jathikaai Mathirai” in treating seizure disorders in children through the clinical study. The quality of the the drug was ensured through analytical studies. The phytochemical analytical studies were performed to screen the chemical constituent of the drug that were responsible for the biological activities like antimicrobial, anti-oxidant property of the drug in the body. The presence of the coumarin, saponin in the preparation were found to be responsible for the anti-epileptic activity. Heavy metal analysis and aflatoxins were found to be below the detection levels. The drug was totally free of bacterial and fungal contamination. Specific pathogen and pesticide residues were absent in the trial drug. This revealed the quality of Jathikaai Mathirai was good. The clinical trial showed 70% had a good prognosis, 16.7% had a moderate prognosis. The parameters like frequency and duration of the seizure was found to be decreased. The other symptoms like headache, general tiredness, poor concentration were also found to be improved clinically. During the treatment period no adverse events like nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal disturbances etc.. were observed in all 30 children under treatment. As the trial drug Jathikaai Mathirai is in tablet form, it is very convincible to administer to the children and it was palatable. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the trial drug “Jathikaai Mathirai” was a potent herbal tablet that was proved to be safe and efficacious in treating “valippu noi”(Seizure disorder) in children of 6 to 12 yrs of age. Jathikaai Mathirai is an effective drug for valippu noi (Seizure disorder) in children, from the following result of this study.  The tablet has rich phytochemical contents in the preparation.  The presence of coumarin and their derivatives demonstrate beneficial, significant anticonvulsant activity.  The HPTLC finger printing of the drug at UV 366nm shows that the peak at Rf 0.02 constitutes 100% of the total area of the separated peaks, which denotes the abundant existence of the drug at minimum peak level itself. It shows drug as phytochemicals.  The drug is free of microbial contamination heavy metals and pesticide residue.  The drug has potent anti-oxidant property.  Clinically the drug revealed good improvement in 70% of children. In summary, epilepsy is a complex disorder that has an impact on many aspects of the child‟s development and functionality. These are currently observable trends of supporting anti-epileptic treatment, especially drug resistant epilepsy with various “natural” diets. Therefore, patients treated with classic anti-epileptic drugs may use “healthy” supplements prepared from medicinal plants and herbs. Further evaluation of Jathikaai Mathirai and approximation of the mechanism of their action is needed so that in the future they can support therapies for epileptic Patients.
