Abstract

The present study Clinical ―Clinical Evaluation of Elathy Chooranam (Internal) And Narseeraga Thylam (External) for The Management of Kalanjaga Padai (Psoriasis) in Children‖ was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the Siddha polyherbal formulations Elathy chooranam for internal and Narseeraga thylam for external in treating Kalanjaga padai (Psoriasis) in Children. The study was approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC) – NIS / IEC / 14 / 2018 - 19 / 16 dated on 20.09.18. This trial was also registered in (CTRI) Clinical Trial Registry of India, CTRI no. CTRI / 2018 / 06 / 014598. Hence the study was safely executed on Children and there were no adverse reactions noted during the study period. The ingredients of the trial drugs consist of anti-inflammatory, immunomodulator, anti-pruritic and anti- psoriatic activities which might have significant role in treating Kalanjaga padai. The phytochemical analytical studies were performed to screen the chemical constituents of the trial drug Elathy chooranam that were responsible for the biological activities. Heavy metal analysis and aflatoxins were found to be below the detection levels. The drug was totally free of bacterial and fungal contamination. Specific pathogens and pesticide residues were absent in the trial drug. This revealed the quality of Elathy chooranam was good. The outcome was clinically observed by PASI score, that was among 30 Children 57% and 30% have showed good and moderate improvement respectively and 13% have showed mild improvement. Itching reduced in 96.6% of Children. Narseeraga thylam contains Psoralea corylifolia which has anti-psoriatic activity might played a major role in treating kalanjaga padai. Stress has been relieved by reducing the lesions, itching and scaling. Academic performance has been improved. As the trial drug Elathy chooranam is easy to take along with ghee and provide better improvement. CONCLUSION: From this study, it is concluded that the trial drugs were potent herbal formulations that were proved to be safe and efficacious in treating ―Kalanjaga padai‖ (Psoriasis) in Children of 5 to 12 years of age. Siddha polyherbal formulations mentioned in ―Siddha vaidhya thirattu and Aathma ratchamirtham ennum vaidhya sarasangiragam‖ respectively, a Compendium of Siddha formulations, are considered and concluded as an effective drug for Kalanjaga padai (Psoriasis) in Children, from the following results of the study.  The ingredients of the chooranam has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulator activity.  The ingredients of Narseeraga thylam has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulator and anti-pruritic activities.  Psoralea corylifolia in Narseeraga thylam has anti-psoriatic property which plays a major role in treating kalanjaga padai.  The drug Elathy chooranam is free of microbial contamination, heavy metals and pesticide residue.  Clinically the drugs revealed good improvent with reduction in itching in 96.6% of Children and in PASI score 57% and 30% have showed good and moderate improvement respectively.  The chooranam is easy to take along with ghee.
