Abstract

BACKGROUND: Anogenital warts pose a bigger challenge because of reluctance of the patient and their propensity to relapse. Scar formation and recurrence rate are common following conventional therapy. AIM OF THE STUDY: To compare the efficacy of homologous autoinoculation and autoinoculation plus oral zinc in the treatment of anogenital warts. (Immunotherapy + Immunomodulator). METHODS: 50 anogenital wart patients were randomly allocated into two groups. Group A (n=25) will receive homologous autoinoculation and Group B (n=25) will receive autoinoculation and oral zinc acetate (10mg/kg maximum of 600mg/day) for 2 months. Both groups were followed for 6 months. Response to treatment is calculated by comparing the size and number of lesions during each visit. Patients responding within 12 weeks of treatment were considered significant. RESULTS: The mean age in the study population was 34.2 years. Most of them had multiple anogenital warts with average duration of 4.1 and 3.9 weeks respectively. 64 % of patients showed complete resolution of lesions in Group B as compared to 23 % in group A. Group B showed statistically significant reduction in the size and number of lesions at 4,8 and 12th week with p value 0.0136. CONCLUSION: As genital warts impose major psychological burden and morbidity to the patients, Immunomodulators are one of the effective methods of treatment in anogenital warts and are devoid of major adverse effects. Combination of zinc with autoinoculaion enhances the treatment response with minimal side effects and recurrence rate.
