Abstract

The present study, “Effectiveness of Nursing Strategies on knowledge and Practice of Febricidal measures among Mothers of Children admitted in pediatric ward at KMCH Coimbatore” was undertaken by Reg.No.30104411during the year 2011-2012 in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Nursing at KMCH college of Nursing Coimbatore which is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr.M. G. R. Medical University. OBJECTIVES: 1. Assess the knowledge and practice of mothers regarding febricidal measures. 2. Evaluvate the effectiveness of Nursing Strategies on Febricidal measures among mothers of children admitted with fever. 3. Find out the relationship between Knowledge and Practice of mothers on Febricidal measures after Nursing Strategies. 4. 4.Associate the selected demographic variables of Mothers with their knowledge and Practice on Febricidal measures. The study based on the Swanson Theory of Caring, in this theory the Nursing care is a set of processes that are formed from the nurse’s own principles and his or her interaction with the patient, with five basic processes of knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and effectiveness of Nursing Strategies. The study design was one group pre and post test design, 50 mothers were selected by non probability purposive sampling. The content validity of the tool was obtained from various experts from paediatric medicine and nursing. The study was conducted at paediatric ward in KMCH at Coimbatore. Pre-assessment was done On admission day by a, structured questionnaire to assess the knowledge on febricidal measures and observational checklist was used to assess the practice on Febricidal measures .The average time taken to answer the questionnaire was 30 minutes. Followed by individual teaching was given to mothers on monitoring temperature, drug administration and rehydration , average time taken for teaching was 20 minutes. Followed by individual teaching was given to mothers on monitoring temperature, fluid and drug administration. After the demonstration and individual teaching, the mothers skill in nursing strategies were observed by the investigator on day one and 3rd day. MAJOR FINDING OF THE STUDY: ❖ The demographic characteristics of mother showed that 54% of mothers are in the age group of 26-30 yrs .48%mothers were higher secondary education, 94% of mothers are from Hindu religion and 54% mothers obtain the source of information from health professionals. ❖ The children demographic data revealed that 40% children are in the age group of 30 months to 36 months 58%children are males .The present illness of children were dehydration and viral fever 3% respectively and the type of feeding 40% children were soft diet. ❖ The paired t test for the mean difference between pre and post test knowledge scores of mothers on febricidal measures was 16.964 ,which was statistically significant (P< 0.01) .There was a gain in knowledge by mothers after nursing strategies on febricidal measures. ❖ The “t” test for the mean difference between pre and post test practice scores of mothers on febricidal measures was10.798, which was statistically significant (P< 0.01) .There was a gain in practice by mothers after nursing strategies on febricidal measures. ❖ The mean difference between the pre and post test mean score in Temperature monitoring was 4.54 and 6.70 respectively and the paired t’ value was 13.50. The mean difference between the pre and post test mean score in Drug administration was 4.54 and 6.70. respectively and paired t’ value was 10.568 and the mean difference between the pre and post test mean score of Rehydration was 4.54 and 6.70 respectively and paired t’ value was 10.568. ❖ Karl Pearson’s co-efficient of correlation indicates that a positive correlation (r=0.513) between knowledge and practice on Febricidal measures. The present study depicts that gain in knowledge improves the caring ability of mothers on febricidal measures. RECOMMENDATIONS: ❖ A similar study can be undertaken in a large group of samples. ❖ A study can be conducted to measure the fever clearance time of management of fever. ❖ A descriptive study can be done to assess the traditional belief of parents regarding fever. ❖ A longititudinal study can be undertaken to determine the incidence of febrile seizures. ❖ A similar study can be undertaken in community settings.
