Abstract

The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of picture exchange communication system to improve the communication skill among children with autism. The purpose of the study was to identify the effectiveness of picture exchange communication system to improve the communication skill among children with autism. The conceptual frame work of this study is based on J.W.Kenny’s open system model. Extensive review of literature, professional experience and expert guidance from the field of child health nursing led the investigator to collect the relevant information facts to support the study, to design the methodology and conceptual frame work and to develop tools according to the need for the study. An experimental design was adopted for the study. The tool consists of Demographic variables, Modified Assessment Scale of Social and Communication Skills for Children with Autism & Modified Assessment Scale for Basic Language and Learning skills to assess the communication skills and learning skills for children with autism. The content validity of the tool was obtained from nursing and medical experts. Pilot study was conducted for a period of one week prior to the main study. The main study was conducted for a period of 4 weeks at Sri Prashanthi School by using the random sampling technique. The main study was conducted among 40 samples. Data were collected by using the tool adopted by the investigator.The investigator introduced herself and developed good rapport with the management of the school and parents of children with autism and took oral consent from them to participate in the study. The data collected were organized, analyzed, and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the present study revealed that the picture exchange communication system is effective in improving the communication skills of children with autism. But there is no association between the age, age at detection of autism, type of family, educational status of mother. RECOMMENDATIONS: The study recommends the following for further research
