Abstract

OVULATION REGULATING ACTIVITY OF "KURUVICHI POONDU CHOORANAM": The plant of Ehretia microphylla (Kuruvichi poondu) had been collected from Kollimallai Hills, Salem district, Tamilnadu and authenticated by experts. ❖ The literary review in Siddha and botanical aspects had been visibly discussed. ❖ The drug was subjected to step wise process of investigations like pharmacognostic study phytochemical, chemical and physio-chemical analysis to report the creditability of drug. ❖ Toxicity studies had its special role in placement of drug at its next level by establishment as safety drug. Ovulation regulating activity had prominent feature through validation of folliculogenesis and ovulation with normal estrus cycle. ❖ Kuruvichi poondu Chooranam was preferred for this study to establish the action on ovulation disorders and irregular menstrual cycle, with 82% improvement in irregular menstrual cycle which helps in the management of Kapavayu (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The clinical study had shown good improvement in patients. ❖ As a result of scrutinisation of all results the unique Siddha medicine, powdered form of Ehretia microphylla (Kuruvichi poondu) will be significantly safe and highly effective. ❖ It is evident that, with a logical and less invasive natural treatment regimen can be selected that will be safe and highly effective. So I would like to continue my future study on Kuruvichi poondu in fertility enhancing activity. CONCLUSION: The Siddha drug Kuruvichi poondu chooranam reveals the beneficial activity in ovulation regulation and folliculogenesis. ❖ The model and study design demonstrates the feasibility of evaluating powdered form of Ehretia microphylla (Kuruvichi poondu chooranam) in the management of polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(Karpavayu). ❖ The literary reviews along with phytochemical, chemical constituent’s aids in justification of drug.Standardisation of drug through various physio chemical analysis and pharmacognostic study had emerged as a part of study for quality and acceptability of drug. ❖ The availability, collection and preparation of the drug is simple. Acute toxicity studies in animals had revealed the safety of the drug upto 5000 mg/kg and classified as class I drug. ❖ Ovulation regulating activity in animals show that Kuruvichi poondu chooranam at high dose promote the pituitary-ovary axis activities, or direct hormonal effects on reproductive organs resulting in stimulation of ovarian steroidogenesis leading to elevation in the serum concentrations of LH, FSH and estradiol hormones, as well as increase the mean numbers of follicles and eventually ovarian and uterine weight. Hence it might enhances fertility. ❖ The clinical trial shows the possible benefits of the drug in treating ovulation disorders with 71% marked response, 13% moderate response with dominant follicle formation and regular menstrual cycle. Statistical analysis shows p value < 0.05 which is considered very statistically significant. ❖ The study justifies the magnitude of Ehretia microphylla (Kuruvichi poondu chooranam) for ovulatory problem and other fertility disorders, though further research is necessary to better understand the role of herbal combination to improve fertility and prevent infertility disease. ANTI-ULCER ACTIVITY OF “POONEERU CHUNNAM": ❖ Herbo-mineral drug Pooneeru Chunnam was prepared as per Siddha classical way and its efficacy on peptic ulcer (Vatha Gunmam) was evaluated. ❖ The literary review in Siddha and modern aspect are discussed thoroughly and the valuation of drug had been established. ❖ Studies involving phytochemical, chemical, elemental and physio chemical analysis are done to make its efficiency more visible. ❖ The pharmacological analysis showed that the drug has got significant Anti ulcer activity with cytoprotective mechanism. ❖ In clinical study the drug has showed 76% marked response to peptic ulcer. ❖ This present study confirms that Pooneeru Chunnam has remarkable Anti ulcer activity and prooves the words written in Siddha literature are evergreen. CONCLUSION: The trial drug Pooneeru Chunnam is selected from the classical siddha text Anubhoga Vaidhya Navaneetham by Hakeem P. Mohammed Abdulla Sahib for the evaluation of safety and management of Peptic Ulcer. (Vatha Gunmam). ❖ The trial drug was duely identified and authenticated by the gunapadam experts. The literary reviews along with Phytochemical, chemical constituents, elemental analysis supports the efficient activity of the drug, Standardisation of the drug was done by physio chemical analysis. Pooneeru is antagonist (sathru saraku) to Vediuppu. Hence the drug works by the phenomena of sathru – mithru combination; thereby increase their potency within each other. Salt taste of Pooneeru Chunnam decreases vatham, the dearanged humor in peptic ulcer (vatha gunmam). This justifies the distinct formulation of distinct of Pooneeru Chunnam. ❖ Presence of of flavanoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, terpinoids, and aminoacids helps in healing ulcer. ❖ Presence of Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Ferrous, Phosphate, and Carbonate aids in mucosal protection and heals ulcer. ❖ Acute and sub acute toxicity studies in animals had revealed the safety of the drug upto 5000 mg/kg. From this maximum tolerable dose level the therapeutic dose (1/10 of MTD) for the pharmacological study was determined. ❖ Anti ulcer activity of Pooneeru Chunnam shows healing of Ethanol – acid induced gastric ulcer through anti oxidant property of flavanoids and by prostaglandins synthesis p< 0.05 which is statistically significant. The open clinical trial results reveal 76% marked response in healing ulcer with p<0.0001. ❖ Through above supportive theories of Pooneeru Chunnam, it can be concluded that the drug throw new light on Siddha system and Peptic ulcer disease.
