Abstract

In India, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases rank second only after pulmonary tuberculosis , which is the leading disease affecting the respiratory system. The incidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is high in the middle-aged subjects.This study documents the age and sex distribution of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases and the exposure of risk factors of COPD in Thanjavur population. Further more this study is to elucidate the relationship of clinical symptom and spirometry abnormalities and also the incidence of right heart failure in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. COPD is the disease of aged as majority of patients in the present study belong to the age group of 50 – 80 years. Spirometry is the mandatory investigation to diagnose and assess the severity of COPD. Most number of cases had severe airway obstruction which was not reversible. High flattened diaphragm and hyperlucent lungs were the most common chest x-ray finding observed in this study.
