Abstract

BACKGROUND: In asian countries the most frequently used pesticide in agriculture field and industrial settings is organophosphorous. The morbidity and mortality from acute OP compound poisoning is attributed to respiratory failure. In such patients acid base imbalance is commonly seen. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To correlate clinical severity scoring, serum cholinesterase levels and acid base imbalance in organophosphorous poisoning patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were clinically categorised with WHO peradeniya organophosphorous (POP) scale, serum cholinesterase levels were monitored from admission till serially and acid base imbalance was determined by arterial blood gas analyzer reports from three variables PH, PCO2, HCO3. RESULTS: Totally 50 patients were studied which included of all age groups. Majority of them were having acid base disturbances with marked low levels of cholinesterase. On ABG reports 42% of cases had respiratory alkalosis, 22% had respiratory acidosis, 10% had metabolic alkalosis, 6% had metabolic acidosis, 20% showed normal acid base values. CONCLUSION: Acid base imbalance was seen in organophosphorous poisoning patients with low levels of cholinesterase levels and its interpretation can help in early recovery by appropriate respiratory ventilation to organophosphorous poisoning patients.
