Abstract

Cases of Osteoarthritis with predefined symptoms of Bryonia alba have been taken up for the study by estimating the level of Hyaluronan synthase before and after treatment. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To understand the effectiveness of Bryonia alba in changing the level of Hyaluronan synthase in knee Osteoarthritis. 2. To study the improvement in patients, correlating with the pre intervention symptomatic score and post intervention symptomatic score. The study revealed that there was an increase in Hyaluronan synthase in 23 cases (77%) and improvement in the symptoms with p value of 0.01 (95%). Thus the study proves that Bryonia alba increases the Hyaluronan synthase level with decrease in Hyaluronic acid which results in symptomatic relief. SUMMARY: From this study, mainly the age group affected with Osteoarthritis of knee is 45 to 55 years and 56 to 65 years. Both males and females are included in this study where females are more commonly affected. It is observed that females who are housewives are more prone to get this disease. The signs and symptoms mainly presented by the patients were pain, swelling, tenderness, morning stiffness, oedema, crepitus, local warmth and limbing gait. Bryonia alba is having more action on serous membranes of the joints especially knee joint. Stitching in serous membrane is the marked key point. Bryoniaalba is prescribed according to the symptoms produced by the patient. They have been prescribed with medium potency. And regular follow ups were maintained accordingly. VAS score improvement can also be observed from this study. In this study, HAS2 level has been changed from the previous value while considering the pre and post intervention score with relief of the annoying symptoms of the patients of OA. The study proves that Bryonia alba increases the Hyaluronan synthase level with decrease in Hyaluronic acid which results in symptomatic relief. The study revealed that there was an increase in Hyaluronan synthase in 23 cases (77%) and improvement in the symptoms with p value of 0.01 (95%).
