Abstract

To compare the outcomes of ossiculoplasty in terms of intra and post operative course and hearing results, using Teflon middle ear prosthesis in patients who have ossicular chain erosion. Patients between 20 and 50 years of age who had a history of chronic ear discharge along with conductive deafness were included in this study. After assessment of ossicular erosion, the patients were subjected to ossiculoplasty using teflon prosthesis. The patients were then followed up after 3 months and the functional and anatomical results were analysed. 32 patients with ossicular chain defect were included in this study. Out of this 8 patients underwent ossiculoplasty using TORP and the remaining 24 underwent ossiculoplasty using PORP. Postoperative hearing evaluation by pure tone audiogram was done after 3months, which showed successful hearing improvement. Extrusion was seen in one case. Other complications were nil. In patients with Teflon TORP average post operative pure tone average was 43 Db and net gain in hearing was 21 decibels. In patients with PORP prosthesis, average post operative pure tone average was 32 dB and net gain in hearing was 12 decibels. The average postoperative hearing gain following ossiculoplasty was 14dB.
