Abstract

BACKGROUND: Flexural fatigue results in clinical failure of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin dentures, hence improvement in its physical, mechanical properties can be done by reinforcement with aluminium oxide (Al2O3) filler and different polymerization techniques. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate and compare the flexural strength and surface hardness of PMMA samples reinforced with 8,13wt% of Al2O3 filler, and polymerized by water bath and autoclave. METHODOLOGY: The samples were fabricated with conventional heat cure resin (control group), 8, 13wt% Al2O3 filler reinforced PMMA (experimental groups). They were cured in water bath at 74℃ for 90 minutes and 100℃ for 30 minutes and cured in autoclave at 121℃ and holding temperature for 30 minutes with 210kPa pressure. They were finished and stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24 hours. Flexural strength, surface hardness of specimens were determined using universal testing machine, Vickers hardness tester respectively. RESULTS: The results showed statistically significant difference in flexural strength of control groups. There was significant difference in flexural strength among autoclaved groups and water bath polymerized groups. There was significant difference in surface hardness of 13wt% Al2O3 filler reinforced PMMA group. There was significant difference in surface hardness among the three autoclaved groups. CONCLUSION: Water bath polymerized control group showed highest flexural strength, other groups showed no superior flexural strength than this group. 8wt% Al2O3 reinforced PMMA group polymerized by autoclaving showed higher surface hardness among autoclaved groups and also than all other groups. 13wt% Al2O3 reinforced PMMA group polymerized by water bath showed higher surface hardness than autoclaved group.
