Abstract

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim and objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the tear strength of irreversible hydrocolloid impression material containing quaternary ammonium compound and silver nanoparticles with the conventional irreversible hydrocolloid without additives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conventional irreversible hydrocolloid, IH with 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% w/w quaternary ammonium compound and IH with 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% w/w silver nanoparticles were used in this study. 160 trouser shaped specimens of dimension 50*150*1mm were prepared. Half of these specimens were divided into group Q and the other half of the specimens were included in group S. All the specimens were subjected to tear strength testing by trouser test using Universal Testing Machine. RESULTS: The mean tear strength of the control, quaternary ammonium compound subgroups at 0.5,1 and 1.5% (w/w) concentrations were 0.230 N, 0.285 N, 0.266 N and 0.208 N respectively. The mean tear strength of the control, silver nanoparticles subgroups at 0.5,1 and 1.5% (w/w) concentrations were 0.230 N, 0.186 N, 0.205 N, and 0.207 N respectively. The tear strength of the quaternary ammonium compound group was highly significant compared to the silver nanoparticle group. The tear strength of the subgroups showed that the quaternary ammonium compound at 0.5% had the highest tear strength. CONCLUSION: The findings of this investigation suggest that the reinforcement of irreversible hydrocolloid with quaternary ammonium compound increased the tear strength of the impression material. Of these, quaternary ammonium compound reinforced group at a concentration of 0.5% (w/w) had higher tear strength.
