Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of soldering and laser welding on the bond strength of co – cr alloy and ceramic. METHOD: Thirty co – cr base metal alloy rectangular blocks of 8mm length x 4mm height x 4mm width were prepared and veneered with ceramic (Vita, Bad Sackingen, Germany). Samples were divided into three groups (Group I, Group II and Group III ). Each group contained ten samples. Group I samples were categorized as soldered co – cr alloy to ceramic. Group II samples are laser welding co – cr alloy to ceramic and Group III samples were categorized as Control group which are untreated co – cr alloy to ceramic. A total of thirty test samples were tested for shear bond strength in Universal testing machine. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that laser-welded and conventionally soldered metal surfaces had significantly lower bond strength to ceramic when compared with the control group P value =0.000421. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. These results were confirmed with SEM images which indicated primarily adhesive failures in laser-welded and soldered metal ceramic groups, while cohesive types of failures within he ceramic layer were observed in the control group. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that soldering and laser-welding procedures significantly decreased the shear bond strength of a veneering ceramic to a co cr base metal alloy. Therefore, remaking a defective restoration might be a preferred option.
