Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index (ARI) and the surface characteristics of the samples treated with conventional acid etching and Er,Cr:YSGG laser etching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 78 maxillary premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic purpose were used in this study. The samples were divided into 6 groups: acid etching (control) group (37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds) and the 5 Er,Cr:YSGG laser etching (study) groups (1.5W/10seconds, 1.5W/15seconds, 3W/5seconds, 3W/10 seconds, 3W/15seconds) groups. 3 samples from each group were subjected for scanning electron microscopic analysis following etching. In the remaining 10 samples in each group, brackets were bonded and were subjected to shear bond strength testing. RESULTS: Acid etching with 37% phosphoric acid & laser etching with 1.5W for 15seconds and 1.5W for 10seconds produced preferable type III etch pattern. Laser etching with 3W for 5seconds produced type IV etch pattern & laser etching with 3W for 10seconds and 3W for 15seconds produced type V etch pattern. The shear bond strengths of laser etching at 1.5W/15seconds & 1.5W/10seconds were similar to the acid etching. Laser etching with 3W/5seconds, 3W/10 seconds and 3W/15seconds produced lesser shear bond strength and the difference was statistically significant. Adhesive remnant score indicates that there is a statistically significant difference between acid etching group and the other 5 laser groups. In acid etching group more amount of adhesive is left on the tooth when compared to the laser etching groups. In the laser etching group, bond failure occurs more frequently at the enamel-adhesive interface. It implies that bond between the enamel and adhesive was much stronger than that between the adhesive and the bracket base. CONCLUSION: The bond strength attained by laser etching (1.5W/10seconds & 1.5W/15 seconds) was comparable to that obtained by acid etching technique. So it can be concluded that laser etching can be a viable alternative to acid etching. Laser etching can even produce superior results because of its numerous advantages like versatility, precision, ease of handling, time saving and formation of caries resistant enamel.
