Abstract

Primary liver tumors are the third largest group of solid abdominal neoplasms in children next to neuroblastoma and Wilms' tumor28. Hepatic tumors account for about 0.5% to 2% of all pediatric neoplasms29. Primary tumors of liver are divided into benign and malignant epithelial and non-epithelial neoplasms18. 50 to 60% of primary liver tumors in children are malignant in which hepatoblastoma is most common followed by hepatocellular carcinoma30. Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of liver is the third most common malignant pediatric liver tumors31. In children, benign tumors constitute only 30% of liver tumors and most are hemangioendothelioma, followed by mesenchymal hamartoma20. Hepatocellular adenoma is a rare benign tumor in children13. Childhood liver tumors have received great attention because of their vast histologic variety, uncertainty about pathogenesis and classification and difficulties in treatment1. Benign tumors showed female preponderance when compared to malignant counterpart. Liver tumors are more common in the right lobe. The availability of high quality ultrasonography, computerised axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have allowed us to characterise pediatric liver tumors with great precision using non invasive modalities.
