Abstract

Aging is an inevitable phenomenon in all biological beings. It is a natural process. Old age is a crucial phase where the physiological, psychological and sociocultural changes take place. There is an increase in number of older people in the world population of both developed and developing countries due to increased life expectancy. This has leads to increased proportion in old age population and eventually old age health problems, requiring more specialized care and facilities. Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives. More over old age consist of many degenerative disorders. The world wide increase in the older population coupled with economic, social and other changes have inevitably affected the needs for health care. The recent Indian census (2011) shows that among 1.2 billion, 60 million are above the age of 65years, most of them are commonly suffering from knee joint pain. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mustard oil massage among elders in selected rural areas at Kanyakumari. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: A study to evaluate the effectiveness of mustard oil massage on level of knee joint pain among elders in selected rural areas at Kanyakumari. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the level of knee joint pain before and after mustard oil massage among elders in experimental and control group. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of mustard oil massage on the level of knee joint pain in control and experimental group. 3. To determine the association between the level of knee joint pain among elders with their selected demographic variables in experimental and control group. HYPOTHESES: H1: There will be a significant difference between the mean pre and post test level of knee joint pain among elders in experimental group. H2: There will be a significant difference between the mean pre and post level of knee joint pain among elders in control group. H3: There will be a significant difference between the mean post level of knee joint pain among elders in experimental and control group. H4: There will be a significant association between the level of knee joint pain among elders with their selected demographic variables in experimental and control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research design adopted was true experimental randomized pre test, post test design. The conceptual frame work for this study was based on Katharine Kolcab theory of comfort (1990).The study has been in conducted in Chenbhagaraman pudhur and Kannan pudhur, Kanyakumari. Probability simple random sampling technique by lottery method was adopted to select the desired samples. The data was collected using a structured interview and pretest and post test assessment using Oxford knee score. Mustard oil massage was given to the experimental group for 14 days. Routine nursing care was given to the control group. RESULTS: The collected data were analyzed by using both descriptive statistics and inferential statistical method. Paired ‘t’ test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of Mustard oil Massage to reduce the level of knee joint pain among elders. The obtained ‘t’ value 22.95 was significant at p<0.05 level. CONCLUSION: The finding of the study shows that the administration of mustard oil massage was effective in reducing level of knee joint pain among elders in experimental group.
