Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Herpes genitalis is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections caused by both HSV-1 and HSV-2.The predominant type isolated from genital area is HSV-2.The diagnosis of genital herpes is usually made clinically but it has poor sensitivity. To confirm the diagnosis, laboratory tests available are Tzanck smear, Histopathology, Viral culture, Serology and PCR. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the efficacy of Real Time PCR & ELISA in terms of rapidity, reliability and accuracy in the diagnosis of genital herpes. OBJECTIVES: 1. To confirm the diagnosis of clinically suspected Genital Herpes. 2. To determine the efficacy of Real Time PCR & ELISA in terms of rapidity, reliability and accurate diagnosis of Genital Herpes. 3. To decrease the morbidity associated with genital herpes. METHODOLOGY: The study population comprised of 60 men with clinically suspected genital herpes attending the Institute of Venereology, Madras Medical College, Chennai between October 2017 – March 2018. RESULTS: Out of the 60 patients, HSV-1 Ig M was positive in 3(5%), followed by HSV-1 Ig G in 10 cases (17%), HSV-2 Ig M in 4 cases (7%), HSV-2 Ig G in 22 cases (37%), overlap of HSV-1 & HSV-2 ELISA in 6 cases(10%), HSV-1 RT-PCR in 15 cases (25%) and HSV-2 RT-PCR in 42 cases(70%).Overall HSV ELISA was positive in 45 cases i.e, 75% of cases in our study.Over all RT-PCR for HSV was found positive in 57 cases ,i.e, 95% of cases. CONCLUSION: RT-PCR can be used as the first line diagnostic tool if technical and financial resources are available because of its high sensitivity and specificity.
