Abstract

An experimental study to assess the effectiveness of “Nesting” upon the biophysiological parameters, neurobehavioral activity and sucking response of neonates at selected hospitals, Chennai. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the bio- physiological parameters, neurobehavioral activity and sucking response before and after nesting in control and experimental group of neonates. 2. To find out the association between neonatal variables and sucking response before and after nesting in the experimental group of neonates. 3. To determine the maternal level of satisfaction regarding nesting in the experimental group of neonates. 4. To find out the association between the clinical obstetrical variables and the level of satisfaction in the experimental group. The conceptual framework was based on Modified Transtheoritical Model (Prochaska and Diclemente, 1980) which mainly focus on “Promoting Healthier Behaviour Change”. An experimental research approach with pre test and post test design was used to achieve the objectives of the study. The present study was conducted in St.Antony’s Hospital in Chennai, with the sample size of 60 who were selected by simple random sampling technique. An extensive review of literature and guidance by experts laid the foundation to the development of neonatal variables and clinical obstetric variable proforma, Biophysiological parameters observation check list, Neurobehavioral assessment scale, sucking response scale and satisfactory scale for the administration of Nesting. The data collection tools were validated and reliability was established. After the pilot study, the data for the main study was collected. MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:
