Abstract

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To study various gynaecological problems in adolescent girls. DESIGN: Prospective study. METHOD: Total of 150 adolescent girls age ranging from 13 – 19 years attending gynaecology OPD and emergency in KGH Hospital were included in the study. A detailed history regarding the problem along with physical examination was done. Investigation like complete haemogram, coagulation profile, hormonal assay, ultrasonography, karyotyping was advised whenever indicated. RESULTS: In the KGH study menstrual disorder were the commonest presenting complaints (59.2%), followed by vaginal discharge 20.5% and urinary track infection (6.04%). Menstrual abnormalities ranged from amenorrhoea to menorrhagia, commonest being oligomenorrhoea (55.1%) followed by monorrhagia (19.04%). Amenorrhoea comprised of (6%) of the total menstrual abnormality. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding was the commonest cause of irregularities in menstruation (74.7%). 81.2% of adolescent girls were suffering from anaemia ranging from mild to severe form of anaemia, either symptomatic / asymptomatic. CONCLUSION: Menstrual disorders are the commonest gynaecological problem among the adolescent girls. In order to promote better health of teenage girls, the need of hour is to increase awareness and proper attention towards adolescent gynaecology among the adolescent, parents and also the gynaecology. This is perhaps better than by setting up of adolescent clinics.
