AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the efficacy of single dose pre operative antibiotic on clean cases. SOURCE: Patient admitted in Kilpauk Medical College in department of general surgery from may 2014 to September 2014. TYPE OF STUDY: Experimental randomized controlled study. SAMPLING METHOD: Convinience sampling. SAMPLE SIZE: 100 members. 50 – control, 50 – study group. INCLUSION CRITERIA: 1. People of age from 15 – 70 years. 2. People without any co morbidity. 3.Thyroid surgery (Hemithyroidectomy & total thyroidectomy) 4. Hernia surgery (Hernioraphy). 5. Breast surgery (Lump excision & Modified radical mastectomy). 6. Patient of both sex. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: 1. Any surgery more than 3 hours 2. Patient with diabetic, hypertensive , immune compromised or with any co morbitidies. DISCUSSION: Among fifty patients in study group 3 had surgical site infections and among 50 patients in the control group 6 patient developed surgical site infection. The p value is 0. 452. It is not significant. CONCLUSION: Routine perioperative antibiotic is not needed for clean cases single dose pre operative antibiotic is sufficient to reduce surgical site infection.
