Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer ranks fourth among the most common cancer in men and third among most common cancer in women. In India, incidence is about 7/100000. Both endogenous and exogenous factors contribute to the risk of colorectal carcinomas. HER2/neu plays an important role in controlling normal cell growth, differentiation and motility. HER2/neu overexpression results in tumour cell growth and migration. HER2/neu receptor can be used as a therapeutic target in colorectal carcinoma patients with HER2/neu overexpression. AIM OF THE STUDY: 1. To analyse age, sex and site distribution of colorectal carcinoma 2. To study the histopathological features of colorectal carcinoma. 3. To determine the level of expression of HER2/neu in colorectal carcinomas and also its correlation with histological grades. METHODS: Totally 50 cases that are diagnosed as colorectal carcinomas from resected colectomy specimens were included in this study. HER2/neu immunohistochemistry was preformed in 25 cases of colorectal carcinoma. HER2/neu score 2+ and 3+ were considered as positive. RESULTS: Out of 25 cases of colorectal carcinoma, 6 cases showed HER/neu overexpression. Among them, moderate membranous positivity (2+) was observed in 5 cases (10%) of conventional adenocarcinoma (four grade II tumours and one grade I tumour) and strong membranous positivity (3+) was observed in one case (2%) of mucinous carcinoma. CONCLUSION: HER2/neu overexpression was observed in 12% cases. There was a statistically significant correlation between HER2/neu expression with tumour site and configuration. No association was found between HER2/neu expression and other clinicopathological variables like age, gender, clinical presentation, tumour grade, histological variant and tumour stage. Anti - epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody therapy like trastuzumab can be used in these HER2/neu overexpressed colorectal carcinoma patients.
