Abstract

INTRODUCTION: A child is often seen as a source of meaning to life especially for the woman, for whom it forms an important aspect of her femininity. Hence women who are unable to bear children are stigmatized and excluded from religious gatherings leading to stress and psychological strain. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to assess the self esteem and prevalence and severity of anxiety, depression and stigma among women with primary infertility and their sociodemographic profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross sectional study including 62 women with primary infertility, conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Tamilnadu using a semi structured Performa to collect the socio demographic details, while anxiety, depression, self esteem and stigma was assessed using Hamilton rating scale for anxiety (HAM-A), Hamilton rating scale for depression (HAM-D), Rosenberg self esteem scale and Infertility Stigma scale. RESULTS: In our study 25.8% of the respondents had any level of anxiety; 16.1% and 9.7% of the respondents had mild and moderate levels of anxiety respectively. In our study, 38.7% of the respondents had depression; Of the respondents 16.1% , 9.7, 11.3% and 1.6% had mild, moderate, severe and very severe levels of depression respectively. In our study, the mean scores on the Rosenberg Self Esteem Rating Scale and the Infertility Stigma Scale were 23.79 and 86.77 respectively. CONCLUSION: There is a significant prevalence of depression, anxiety, low self esteem and stigma in women with primary infertility warranting intervention for an improved quality of life.
