Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the visual outcome with different types of contact lenses in keratoconus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 221 eyes of 136 newly diagnosed keratoconus patients were analysed in our study. Patients with previous history of contact lens wear and those who have undergone any ocular surgery are excluded from our study. All patients underwent retinoscopic refraction, cycloplegic refraction (when necessary) torch light examination, slit lamp examination with documentation of signs and contact lens trial.Quality of life scores were assessed at the time of entry into study and during follow up at 1 year using National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25. RESULTS: In our study we found that the mean age of presentation was 22.16 years, with male preponderance. Bilateral involvement was found in 62% and unilateral involvement in 38%. With contact lens, 97.3% of eyes improved to 6/9 and more. Rigid gas permeable lens was found to provide good fit and good visual acuity in 97.2% of eyes using contact lens. Quality of life scores showed a significant improvement after contact lens for a period of 1 year. CONCLUSION: Contact lens(particularly rigid gas permeable lens) continues to play a predominant role in the management of keratoconus and also provides a better quality of life in patients with keratoconus.
