Abstract

Adolescence is an important stage in the life of an individual. Good sleep hygiene is as essential for an adolescent as a well balanced diet and adequate exercise. However, sleep deprivation is an important public health problem during adolescence. Several studies have demonstrated the negative effects of acute and chronic sleep insufficiency in adolescents. Sleepiness in adolescents and young adults affects their academic performance, mental health, cardiovascular health and safety on the road. Our study aims to analyze the level of sleep insufficiency in our adolescents and related sleep problems. Sleep parameters were comparable to those observed in other parts of world. Adolescents in our study population have reported a reasonably good quality of sleep and sleep hygiene practices. Sleep hygiene has a good relationship with sleep quality. Use of electronic media close to bed time and not following a regular sleep schedule affect the sleep quality in our population.
