Abstract

BACKGROUND : Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine introduced by Samuel Hahnemann that is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’. The inclusion of homeopathic medicine in dentistry can help alleviate the patient’s apprehension and provide patient comfort. AIM : To evaluate the effectiveness of the homeopathy medicine calcarea fluor as an adjunct to non-surgical therapy in patients with chronic periodontitis. METHODS : A total of 20 patients were selected and divided into two groups of 10 each. The first group was treated with scaling and root planing alone (group I) while the second group was given calcarea flour (30s) for 3 months after scaling and root planning ( group II) was done. Blood sample was collected from all subjects at baseline and 3 months after treatment. Clinical parameters such as plaque index (PI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline and 3 months after therapy. RESULTS : There was no statistically significant reduction between PI, GBI, CAL and osteopontin level between group I and group II after therapy, but PPD showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION : Within the limits of the present study, it may be concluded that calcarea fluor might be used as an adjunctive measure to scaling and root planning in patients with chronic periodontitis. In future, clinical interventional studies with larger sample size may be employed to further validate the effectiveness of this medicine in dentistry.
