BACKGROUND : Colorectal carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.HER-2/neu is a useful antigenic marker in immunological studies of colorectal carcinoma. Aim of the study is to evaluate HER-2/neu expression in colorectal carcinoma and its correlation with clinicopathologic variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS : The present study was conducted on thirty histopathologically proven colorectal carcinoma cases for HER-2/neu expression. Both cytoplasmic, membranous and cytoplasmic staining were considered as positive. RESULTS : HER-2/neu was positive in 67% of the cases. It was seen in 77% cases of well differentiated,70% cases of moderately differentiated and 100% cases of poorly differentiated tumours. The positivity was more in grade III tumours as compared to other grades. All the colorectal carcinomas cases with metastatic nodes were positive for HER-2/neu staining.Membranous and cytoplasmic staining was 100% in grade III tumours. CONCLUSION : Thus it is concluded that rate of HER-2/neu expression is high in colorectal carcinoma.Hence targeted therapy could be helpful in patients with high grade and with lymphnode or distant metastases.
