Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Asthenopia is one of the common symptom and consequence of eye pathologies and vice versa. Asthenopia has been found to be closely related with defects in accommodation or binocular visual defects and also uncorrected refractive errors especially myopia which is one among the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The aim of this work is to find the effectiveness of Ruta graveolens 6C in the improvement of asthenopia and visual acuity in myopic individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 20 cases diagnosed with asthenopia and myopia were divided into 10 cases each as control and case groups randomly. The Ruta group was given Ruta graveolens 6C and yogic eye exercises, whereas the control group was given placebo and eye exercises. Asthenopia and computer vision syndrome questionnaires were used to assess asthenopia. Both the pre- and post-intervention scores of both questionnaires were tested in both groups. In both groups, visual acuity was evaluated autorefractors and the values were used to assess the range of myopia before and after intervention. RESULTS: When the statistical findings of pre and post questionnaire improvement in asthenopia and computer vision syndrome questionnaires were compared between the case and control groups, the Ruta group's values revealed substantial changes, but the control group's values did not.In both the Ruta and control groups, the refractive changes in the right and left eye before and after intervention were negligible. Persons spending more than 5 to 8 hours using video digital terminals with reduced break had higher risk of asthenopia and myopia. CONCLUSION: Ruta graveolens 6C is found to be effective in managing asthenopia. On comparing the pathophysiology of myopia and asthenopia to the pharmaceutical and phytochemistry of Ruta graveolens it is found to be an apt medicine for many eye complaints.
