Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Anaemia is defined as reduction in the haemoglobin levels below normal level which is carried by the circulating red blood cells. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) which is one among the five leading causes of human disability worldwide. WHO define Anaemia as haemoglobin levels < 12.0 g/dL in women and < 13.0 g/dL in men. Among all the symptoms of IDA Fatigue is the troublesome clinical feature. Research on anemic patients resulted in increase in Haemoglobin level has positive correlation with fatigue symptom and improvement in quality of life. The FACIT-FATIGUE SCALE provides a psychometrically reliable measure of fatigue in individuals with IDA, according to a study. In this study Homoeopathic treatment mainly concentrates on good absorption and its utilization in the body as per dietery intake instead of supplements. So this study focuses on improvement in the fatigue of an IDA patient which is assessed by the Hb values and FACIT – Fatigue Score after the Homoeopathic intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on a sample of 35 cases of fulfilling IDA diagnostic criteria. The cases were screened and enrolled from OPD, IPD of Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital. FACIT-FATIGUE SCORE and Hb values was assessed on each case once in 3 months for a duration of about 6 months, after the prescription of a Constitutional Homoeopathic Medicine based on individuality. RESULTS: The FACIT – Fatigue Score and Hb values before and after administration of medicine was compared using Paired ‘t’ test value and was statistically significant at p value < 0.05. Improvement was very significant at the last 3 months than the first 3 months of study. The correlation between Hb values and FACIT – Score was moderately positive with the individualized Homoeopathic treatment. CONCLUSION: This study thus proves that the Homoeopathic Constitutional Medicine selected based on the chronic totality can effectively manage the Fatigue symptom of Iron Deficiency Anaemia with overall improvement in the quality of life of the patients. And also shows that there is moderately positive correlation between Hb values and FACIT- Score after homoeopathic intervention in IDA patients. Homoeopathy can be used as a mainstream strategy for Iron Deficiency Anaemia for the benefit of suffering human kind.
