Abstract

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia in which Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a highly prevalent chronic disease affecting more than 311 million people globally. There are numerous studies manifesting the effects of asanas on the blood glucose levels. However, there are very less studies to prove the effect of pranayama without asanas on the reduction of blood glucose levels. Hence bhastrika pranayama was selected based on the literature review in this present study to evaluate the effect of bhastrika pranayama on random blood glucose (RBG) levels in patients with T2DM. METHODS: A total of 100 subject with T2DM fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. All the subjects of the study group (n=50) underwent the bhastrika pranayama intervention for 10 mins and control group (n=50) 10 mins of normal breathing. Assessment of Random Blood Glucose (RBG) level was done pre and post intervention in both the groups. Statistical analysis was performed using statistical package for the social sciences, version 16 and P value <0.05 was considered as significant. RESULTS: There is a significant reduction in RBG levels in the study group in comparison with the control group. Conclusion: The Results of the present study manifested the practice of bhastrika pranayama is effective in reducing the blood glucose levels in patients with T2DM.
