Abstract

The Systemic hypertension is a quite common disease in the world, it develops over several years without exhibit any obvious symptoms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Cìraka cūraṇam in the management of Vāta pittam (Systemic hypertension). In this prospective open labelled non-randomized phase II clinical study included 30 OP and 20 IP patients aged between 35 to 70 years at Government Siddha Medical College, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, after performing pre-clinical studies conducted in Wister albino rats at Animal bred house, Dept. of Pharmacology, Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Pharmacy, Krishnankoil, Srivilliputtur, Tamil Nadu. The Cìraka cūraṇam contains tannin, phenol, steroid, quinone, glycoside and alkaloid. Among 20 Inpatients (IP) 15 patients (75%) were male and 05 patients (25%) were female and among 30 outpatients (OP) 17 patients (56.66%) were male and 13 patients (43.33%) were female. The highest incidence of Vāta pittam was observed in 50-54 aged group of 11 (22.00%) OP patients and was observed in 20 (40.00%) known SHT OP patients. Among the 50 patients 17 (34.00%) OP patients had giddiness and 17 (34.00%) had headache. The highest incidence was observed in 21 (42.00%) and 25 (50.00%) OP patients had Vathapitha naadi before and after treatment respectively and 28 (56.00%) OP patients had mixed Neikuri pattern before and after treatment. The mean systolic blood pressures in the hypertensive population were 144, 115.8 mmHg and mean diastolic blood pressure was 93.4, 76 mmHg before and after treatment respectively. Finally 18 (36.00%) OP and 15 (30.00%) IP patients had shown good improvement and 11 (22.00%) OP and 04 (08.00%) IP patients had shown moderate improvement after the treatment. Cìraka cūraṇam possesses strong antihypertensive effect against DOCA-salt hypertensive which is proven by a substantial decrease in blood pressure, significant anti-hyperlipidaemic activity, had anti-inflammatory activity to both acute and chronic inflammations, greater diuretic activity, significant antioxidant property, analgesic, and antimicrobial activity. This study results confirmed the validity of traditional indications of CC in hypertension and other cardio vascular events.
