Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lipoxin A4 is an endogenous lipid derived mediator which plays a counterregulatory role in the resolution of inflammation. This study aimed to determine the salivary levels of LXA4 in periodontal health/disease and diabetes mellitus patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty two patients who reported to the KSR Institute of dental Science and Research, Tiruchengode with appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited in this cross sectional study with proper informed consent and subjects were equally divided into three groups of 14 each, Periodontally and systemically healthy (group I), Systemically healthy with Periodontitis (group II) and Periodontitis with type II diabetes mellitus (group III). Clinical parameters PI, GI, PD and CAL were recorded and unstimulated saliva samples were collected and levels of LXA4 were analyzed using sandwich enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The mean value of salivary lipoxin A4 was 0.529±0.194 in periodontally healthy group, 0.356±0.158 in periodontitis group and 0.193±0.215 in periodontitis with type II diabetes group. Thus LXA4 level was significantly lesser in periodontitis with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to other groups. (P=0.01). CONCLUSION: This study finding strongly suggests that the pro-resolving lipid mediator LXA4 could be used as a prognostic biomarker in periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus.
