Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to assess the secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure on pregnant women and its effect on their newborns. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was i) to evaluate the Second-Hand Smoke exposure and oral hygiene status among pregnant women using a questionnaire ii) to screen secondhand smoke exposure by using a urine test strip to detect the presence of nicotine in their urine samples and iii) to compare new-borns parameters between secondhand smoke-exposed and non-exposed pregnant women using a pre-validated questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHOD: An observational cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1200 pregnant women and their infants at the Government Headquarters Hospital (GHQH)-Erode, Tamil Nadu. Data on second-hand smoke exposure was collected from participants by face-to-face interview method with the help of pre-validated, structured questionnaire consisting of 23 close-ended questions. The presence of nicotine’s major metabolite, cotinine was detected using single-use urine cotinine test trip. Oral Hygiene Index- Simplified (OHI-S) was used to assess the oral hygiene of pregnant women in our study. RESULTS: Out of 1200 pregnant women who participated in the study, the mean age group of the study participants was about 25.11±3.96. About 32% of the women in our study were exposed to secondhand smoke. SHS exposed women were one and half times (OR=1.63(95% CI) more likely to deliver a low-birth-weight baby compared to non-exposed women. Most of the pregnant women presented with fair oral hygiene (54.6%). CONCLUSION: According to the findings, there was a significant association between pregnant women's SHS exposure and low birth weight (LBW).
