Abstract

BACKGROUND: In elders, xerostomia is a chronic condition that significantly affects their quality of life. Salivary substitutes are indicated in progressive xerostomia. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the effectiveness of two herbal preparations: chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and linseed (Linum usitatissimum) as a salivary substitute in patients with the decreased salivary flow compared with a conventional salivary substitute. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 60 elderly participants presenting with xerostomia of varied causes were selected. The inclusion criteria were as follows: adults of both genders presenting with a sensation of the dry mouth of any origin, determined by survey using a visual analogue scale. Exclusion criteria were as follows: subjects with oral mucosal lesions, with oral motor disorders and with evident cognitive limitation. Saliva samples were collected and measured using a graduated cylinder. The participants were randomly divided into Herbal group (A), Conventional group (B) and Control group. Herbal saliva substitute and carboxymethyl cellulose conventional saliva substitute were tested using a double -blind, randomised, cross -sectional clinical trial. RESULTS: Statistical analysis: Descriptive statistics were used for data summarization and presented using a graphical representation. Analysis of covariance was per formed to determine the effect of the treatment such as herbal salivary substitute and conventional saliva substitute than the control group. Scheffe's post hoc test was performed to compare the pairwise mean difference of the treatment . Study results of clinical tests show that there is a significant relief of symptoms from xerostomia in the herbal group when compared with the conventional group. The mean age of groups A, B and the control group were 59.45, 65.3 and 70.15 respectively. Gender distribution among the participant’s males and females in group A were 2 1 . 6 7% and 11.67%, group B males and females were 23.33% and 10.00% and in the control group, males and females were 16.67%and 16.67% respectively. On sialo metric analysis the obtained F ratio was 63.02, which shows, there was a significant improvement in salivary flow due to the treatments among the herbal and conventional groups during 4 weeks treatment period. VAS scores of F ratio were 50.46 showing there was a significant reduction of symptoms among the herbal and conventional groups. This shows herbal mouthwashes are effective when compared with the conventional group. CONCLUSION: This herbal salivary substitute is an economical, viable, easily manipulated, noncytotoxic, and practical alternative to relieve xerostomia.
