Abstract

BACKGROUND: A consecutive of 300 patients with viable pregnancies undergoing primary cesarean section delivery with Pfannensteil incision was studied for a period of one year from January 2020 to December 2021. Patients were subjected to skin closure with vicryl and prolene, 150 each group were studied. The wounds were evaluated at immediate post-op POD - 2, 6th week follow up. The wound closure with these two types of subcuticular suture material evaluated for which material had a better rate of wound healing, wound complication, pain and satisfaction both in terms of observer and patients view. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the rate of wound healing, wound complications, pain, and patient satisfaction based on used subcuticular suture material. RESULTS: In our study, the need of antibiotic change in vicryl was just 1.3% (2 patients) while prolene group had 10%(15patients) need of change of antibiotic. The need of re-suturing in prolene group was among 6 patients while none of the patient underwent re-suturing in vicryl group. The only disadvantage among vicryl group was the increased complaint of itching and among prolene group the patients had maximum complaints of pain post-operatively. Wound cosmesis score was higher among vicryl group compared to prolene group. The P value was <0.001 and found to be statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Thus, we concluded that vicryl sutures had better healing rate, reduced post-operative pain, reduced rate of wound infection and need of re – suturing. Thereby, we conclude that vicryl group is superior to prolene for skin closure in patients who underwent caesarean section.
