Abstract

The ageing population remain as an important community to be taken more care and attention on. Chronic illness, physical disabilities, mental illnesses and other co-morbidities are nowadays more prevalent among the senior citizens. It is true that sleep pattern of the senior citizens is altered in nature. But at any age, individuals still need quality rest to be healthy. Among the senior citizens, the prevalence of initial insomnia are found in 15%–45%, middle insomnia in 20%–65%, late insomnia in 15%–54%, and 10% have poor sleep quality. A nonpharmacological sleep promotion strategy is an effective method to improve the sleep quality of the senior citizens. TITLE: “A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Psycho Education Module on Sleep Deprivation among Senior Citizens residing at Selected Old Age Home, Chennai.” OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the pre-test level of sleep deprivation among senior citizens residing at selected old age home. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of psycho education module in reducing sleep deprivation among senior citizens residing at selected old age home. 3. To compare the pre-test and post-test level of sleep deprivation among senior citizens residing at selected old age home. 4. To associate the post-test level of sleep deprivation among senior citizens with their selected demographic variables and sleep deprivation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was conducted among 60 elderly clients in a quantitative, pre experimental one group pre-test post-test research design using convenient sampling technique. Sleep deprivation was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Initially, pre-test was conducted then psycho education module on sleep promotion strategies was provided along with teaching sessions. After 4 weeks of practicing the strategies post-test was conducted using the same tool. RESULTS: In pre-test, the mean sleep deprivation score was 13.88, after administration of psycho education module on sleep promotion strategies the posttest mean sleep deprivation score was 9.90 with mean sleep deprivation reduction score difference of 3.98 and percentage of reduction score was 18.95% which is statistically significant χ2=13.27 P=0.001***(S) calculated by Extended McNemar’s test. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that, senior citizens residing at old age home have significant changes in the sleep quality. Senior citizens who received psycho-education module had significant reduction in their sleep deprivation. Hence, Psycho education module on sleep promotion strategies was effective, appropriate and feasible to implement in all settings.
