Abstract

Family members play a vital role in care of mentally ill clients. Caregiver is an individual who has the responsibility of meeting the physical, psychological needs of the dependent patient. While take caring the patient caregivers can often feel stressed, anxious and low since the illness tends to be chronic and demanding. Many research showed that yoga has a significant effect to reduction of stress and anxiety. Hence yoga was used to find the effectiveness on stress and anxiety among primary caregivers of mentally ill clients. TOPIC: The main aim of the study was to “A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Yoga Therapy on Relieving Stress and Anxiety among Primary Care Givers of Mentally Ill Clients admitted in Institute of Mental Health at Kilpauk, Chennai-10.” RESEARCH DESIGN: Quasi experimental research design was used for this present study. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: The non probability convenient sampling technique was used to select 30 experimental group and 30 control group of primary caregivers of mentally ill clients. METHODS: Stress level of primary caregivers was assessed by modified perceived stress scale and anxiety level was assessed by using Hamilton anxiety rating scale. Yoga therapy include, yogic suskayama. pranayama, surya namaskar with shavasanas was administered to 30 experimental group. After the 14th day of intervention the post test was done and find out the effectiveness of yoga therapy. RESULT: The study result shows that After the administration of yoga therapy in experiment group, caregivers are reduced 18.15% of stress score from mean pre-test score of 18.23 to mean post test score of 10.97, the mean difference in stress reduction was 7.26 and the anxiety reduction score was 16.19% from mean pretest score of 20.90 to mean posttest score of 11.83, the mean difference was 9.07 Hence there is a significant reduction of stress and anxiety in the study group of primary care givers of mentally ill than control group. CONCLUSION: The study was concluded that yoga therapy reduced the stress and anxiety among primary caregivers of mentally ill clients.
