Abstract
A comparative study to assess the psychosocial problems of geriatrics population in selected rural and urban areas of Tirupur was done by 301731851 as a partial fulfilment of the requirement of the degree of Master of Science in Nursing at Shivparvathi Mandradiar Institute of Health Science, under the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai, October 2019. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the psychosocial problems of geriatrics population in selected rural and urban areas. 2. To compare the psycho social problems of geriatrics population in selected rural and urban areas. 3. To find out the association between the psychosocial problem and the selected demographic variables on geriatrics population in rural and urban areas. HYPOTHESIS: Hypothesis were formulated and tested as: H01 - There is no significant difference in the psycho social problems of geriatrics population of rural and urban areas. H02 - There is no significant association between the psychosocial problems and the selected demographic variables among geriatrics population in selected rural and urban areas. Review of literature was done for the present study and the literatures were reviewed and classified under the following headings: 1. Studies related to problems of elderly. 2. Studies related to psychosocial problems of Rural and Urban area. The Conceptual framework for the present study was derived from the Roy Adaptation Model designed by Callista (1984). The present study was a quantitative research approach and descriptive in nature. It was comparative descriptive design. For the present study, research variable of the study was psychosocial problems of geriatrics population in urban and rural area. A self-structured rating scale and the demographic variables proforma were used to collect the data by structured interview schedule. The content validity of the tool was established by 6experts in the field. Reliability was assessed by interrater method and the reliability r = 0.7 was found to be reliable for structured rating scale. Pilot study was done on 5 samples, who fulfilled sample selection criteria which were other than the study samples. The study was found to be feasible and there were no practical difficulties during data collection. The main study was collected by structured interview method using structured rating scale. Before collecting the data formal permission was obtained from local authority of rural area of Palayakottai Village and Kangayam urban and an informed consent was obtained from the samples. 60 samples were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The main study was conducted in palayakottai and kangayam. The data collected were manually analysed, interpreted and validated by the bio-statistician. The study findings of the mean deviation was 7. There was no significant association between the psychosocial problems and the selected demographic variables in both rural and urba n areas. The overall mean psychosocial problems among rural geriatrics was 36, SD 3.1 whereas the obtained mean psychosocial problems among urban geriatrics was 43 and SD was 4. The mean difference was 7. Findings of the study in rural areas half of the sample 16 (53.30%) had no psychosocial problems, 10 (33.30%) had mild psychosocial problems, 2 (6.60%) had moderate psychosocial problems and 2 (6.60%) had severe psychosocial problems and in urban 16 (53.30%) had no psychosocial problems, 13 (43.30%) had moderate psychosocial problems, 1 (3.30%) had moderate psychosocial problems and 1 (3.30%) had severe psychosocial problems. The study concluded that psychosocial problems among urban geriatric was high compared to rural geriatric population.
