Health education and counselling given during the pre menopausal period would help the women in reducing the menopausal problems and to lead the remaining of her life peacefully. TITLE: A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge about reducing the menopausal transition symptoms among pre menopausal women in selected rural area. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the pre-test level of knowledge about reducing the menopausal transition symptoms among pre menopausal women. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme about reducing the menopausal transition symptoms among pre menopausal women. 3. To compare the pre-test and post-test knowledge about reducing the menopausal transition symptoms among pre menopausal women. 4. To find out the association between the post-test knowledge of pre menopausal women with their selected demographic variables. METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted with 60 samples in Quantitative research approach, the study design is pre experimental one group pretest and post-test design. Pre menopausal women ranging from 40 – 51 years who have not attained menopause in the Kalaignar Nagar rural areas of Medavakkam were selected for the study by convenient sampling technique. Pre-existing knowledge was assessed by using semi structured questionnaire containing 20 multiple choice questions. After the pretest, Structured teaching programme was given about reducing menopausal transition symptoms among premenopausal women. After 7 days post-test was conducted by using the same tool. Collected data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Frequency and percentage analysis were used to describe demographic characteristics of the study participants. Pre-test and post-test were compared using student’s paired t–test. The association between demographic variables and knowledge score were analyzed using Pearson chi square test. RESULT: The major findings of the study revealed that the overall pre-test level of knowledge score among pre menopausal women was about 43 (71.67 %) of the women are having inadequate knowledge, 14 (23.33 %) of them are having moderate knowledge and 3(5.00 %) of them are having adequate knowledge. After the administration of Structured teaching programme the post-test level of knowledge score was about 45 (75.0 %) of the women are having adequate knowledge, 15 (25.0 %) of them are having moderate knowledge. The overall pretest mean value was 8.68 with of S.D= 3.53 and the post-test mean value was 15.12 with of S.D = 2.28. The improved mean was 6.44 with of S.D 3.38. The student’s paired t – test score was 15.16, which was very highly significant at P ≤0.001. The association between level of knowledge gain score and their demographic variables shows Younger women aged between 40 – 42 years, women those who have attained menarche at 10–12 years of age, women with regular menstrual cycle and women living in nuclear family have gained more knowledge than others. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study revealed that structured teaching programme on reducing the menopausal transition symptoms has significant effect on improving knowledge among pre menopausal women. It gives a great insight to community health nurse and motivates them to arrange health awareness campaign and thereby helps to improve the quality of life during the menopausal transition period by improving knowledge of pre menopausal women.
