Abstract

Falls are one of the leading cause of injury and death of senior citizens. However we don't have to fall pay to ships and falls. Although health related exercise programs can improve muscle strength, gait and balance among elderly persons. Often, more than one underlying cause or risk factor is involved in a fall. A risk factor is something that increases a person's risk or susceptibility to a medical problem or disease. In global, worldwide fall for elders reported incidence, regarding from 224 to 809 / per 1000 persons years, there are also major cause of injuries and resulting disabilities, functional impairments and quality of life. It‟s also essential that nurse researcher appropriately assess and manage the care of elders who experience a fall. In this study, nurse researcher‟s recommendations regarding key precautions for elders under the direct care of registered nurse (RNs) in acute or long term settings. TITLE: “A study to assess the effectiveness of Low Intensity Exercise Program on Gait, Balance and Incidence of fall among elders, Old age home, Tiruvallur District”. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess pre-interventional status of the gait, balance and incidence of fall among elders. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of low intensity exercise program in terms of improving gait, balance and decrease in the incidence of fall among elders. 3. To compare the pre and post interventional status of the gait, balance and incidence of fall among elders. 4. To find out the association between post interventional status of the gait, balance and incidence of fall among elders and selected demographic variables. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was conducted with 60 (elders > 60 years) samples in quantitative approach, Pre experimental one group pre-test and post-test design by non-probability convenient sampling method sampling technique. Gait and balance level and risk of fall was assessed by using Tinetti Gait and Balance assessment instrument. After pre-test, Low Intensity Exercise and educational program related to fall prevention was given to elders. After 4 weeks post-test was conducted using the same tool in both groups. RESULTS: In pre-test, the mean gait and balance score is17.33,after the intervention – Low Intensity Exercise Program post-test gait and balance mean score were 21.75 score, and the difference is 4.42 which is statistically significant calculated by Student's Independent t-test. CONCLUSION: Hence, Low Intensity Exercise Program is appropriate and feasible to implement in all settings. It would help the elders to improve their gait, balance and reduce risk of fall effectively and improve their health status.
