Abstract

The present study was to investigate the anti-ulcer property of Drakshadi kashayam. Through literature survey it was concluded that the drug Drakshadi kashayam have been analyzed for its anti-oxidant property. The gas chromatography and mass spectroscopic analysis were also done which showed the presence of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that acts as an anti-ulcer agent. Thus the study for anti-ulcer property on Drakshadi Kashayam was carried out using four in vivo methods such as Pylorus ligation induced ulcer, indomethacin induced ulcer, phenyl butazone induced ulcer and acetic acid induced ulcer using wistar rats. The standardization of the Drakshadi Kashayam was done by testing the color, appearance, pH value, specific gravity, total solid content and microbial test. The values indicated that the drug was up to standard and further in vivo testing was done. The report obtained from the pylorus ligation induced ulcer, indomethacin induced ulcer, phenyl butazone induced ulcer and acetic acid induced ulcer in male and female wistar rats indicates that the test 2 ( Drakshadi kashayam 1000mg) shows good Anti-Secretary and Anti-Ulcer action compared with the standard drug Ranitidine 50mg. Though this study it is concluded that the both doses Drakshadi kashayam (500mg and 1000mg) possess good anti-ulcer property and anti-secretary property without any harmful effects. The second concentration shows higher efficacy than the first dose and thus increasing the dose may increase the anti-ulcer property. Further studies are required to confirm the exact mechanism behind the Anti-Ulcer activity of Drakshadi Kashayam.
