Abstract

The study was carried out to assess the current trend in drug utilization of non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of pain and inflammation. This study carries the post analysis of 116 cases. The study helps to identify drug utilization of five community pharmacies in Malappuram district and its standard drug guidelines. In this denoted that the physicians preferred both individual drug therapy and multiple drug therapy. The most frequently prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug class was anthranilic acid derivatives for patients. Among anthranilic acid derivatives, mefenamic acid was the most frequently utilized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The most prevalent combination of drug was a two drug combination therapy of paracetamol with mefenamic acid for patients. The current study also helps to identify the cost minimization in pharmacoeconomics. The cost analysis of dispensed brand of prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was 3544 rupees. The cost analysis of least cost brand of non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drug was 1992 rupees. The patients can save 1622 rupees. The importance of educating the patients is appreciated by pioneering clinicians to keep themselves in effective management of fever, pain and inflammation.
