Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rate of tooth movement with micro-osteoperforations (MOPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 12 adult patients with bimaxillary protrusion were selected and divided into control and experimental group. After 6 months of alignment and levelling, the experimental group received micro-osteoperforations using PROPEL Orthodontics (Ossing, NY). The control group received no MOPs. In both the groups, all four first premolars were extracted only after alignment was complete. Anterior en masse retraction was carried out in both the groups and assessed at monthly intervals. The mean rate of tooth movement and anchor loss were compared between experimental and control group using study models and lateral cephalogram respectively. Wong Baker rating scale was used to assess the pain and discomfort level in both the groups. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. RESULTS: The mean rate of tooth movement was statistically significant in the experimental group than the control group (P= 0.000). The anchor loss was statistically significant between the experimental group and the control group (P = 0.000). There was no significant difference in the pain and discomfort levels between the groups. CONCLUSION: MOP assisted en-masse retraction increased the rate of tooth movement by making use of patients own biology through coupled remodelling of the alveolar bone. PROPEL seems to be a viable alternative by reducing the overall treatment time and also making orthodontic treatment more acceptable for adults.
